History

Nether Edge Folk Club has happily spent the last 12 years meeting every Wednesday night in Nether Edge Bowling Club. It provides opportunities for singers, musicians, poets, story-tellers and any other form of performance. These amateur artists simply take it in turn to spend a few minutes entertaining both each other and those who simply come along to listen, rather than perform. As we know, not everyone is a show -off.  All styles of music are acceptable and you’ll hear songs from all over the world, old and new, some accompanied by instruments and some not.

This regular gathering of like-minded people dates back to 1976 when the people of Stannington set up a folk club in Minnies pub, high in the village. The group moved around to the following venues:

Lots of other people help in the background to keep the ship afloat.

The club invites professional artists about once every 6 weeks. Over the years our visitors have included: Julie Felix, Martin Carthy, The Unthanks, Nancy Kerr, Hamish Imlach, Rob Heron and the Teapad Orchestra, Himmerland (Denmark), and the Macrae Sisters (USA).
